Home page needs

First, consider the following:

  • Speak to your target audience.
    • Your homepage should be narrow focused and speak to your audience in words they can understand. We often forget that we know our business so well…but our language for it may not be the same language as the customer.
  • It’s ok to use “you” in your text! Speak to your audience.

Here are a few suggestions for what to include on the homepage.

  • Clearly answer “What do you do/offer/sell?”, “How will it make your customers’ lives better?”, and “How can they buy?”
    • Something to remember: if a visitor can’t identify what you do on the home page within moments of visiting your site, they will leave.
  • What problem does the audience have that you can solve? What’s getting in their way?
    • Provide at least 3 examples of the problem, preferably in bullet points.
  • Make it simple for people to hire you/purchase your products in 3 simple steps. If you can make it easy for your customers to do business with you, they will do business with you!
  • Provide a value proposition.
    • You have a visitor to your website–awesome! Now, what compels them to stick around? This is like building your authority in your business area. Depending on our business, you can:
      • Show how fun your establishment is
      • Show how well you know your stuff
      • Include a short intro video to show what you do
  • Include a Call to Action (CTA)
    • Use at least a primary (if not also a secondary) CTA to direct visitors to the next logical step. Examples might include:
      • Free Trial
      • Schedule a Demo
      • Buy Now
      • Learn More
      • Check out our events page
      • Free download
      • Schedule a free consultation
    • Remember, the goal of the home page is to compel visitors to dig deeper into your website and move them further down the sales funnel. CTAs tell them what to do next so they don’t get overwhelmed or lost. More importantly, CTAs turn your homepage into a sales- or lead-generation engine, and not just brochure!
